ORCHIDS NEED ROOM TO BREATHE

SOS – my orchid is drowning?! Rescue is in sight: With its pole construction, Orchitop reveals the roots of your orchid. The idea: Release orchids from their prison in an ordinary pot and to provide the roots sufficiently with fresh air.

”I wanted to rescue my Mother’s orchids”, says Jürgen Schäfler when he is asked for his motivation.

In daily life, he earns his bread and butter as a fisherman on Lake Constance. The queen of all flowers is, however, demanding but its cultivation is not as challenging as most people think. The most common mistake is that a lot of people are watering their orchids too often. So did his Mother Frieda Schäfler. As soon as her orchids went limp, she took to the watering can. The consequences for all kinds of orchids are molded roots and in the worst case, they even die.

THE FAN OF ALL ORCHIDS WOULD LIKE TO FIND A SOLUTION

Jürgen Schäfler’s ambition as orchid enthusiast was born. He started to think, to puzzle, to construct.

”I wanted to find an easy way for my Mother to water and grow her flowers. She should be able to see the roots and the roots should have enough space to grow freely.” He wanted to discover a way to end the usual way of buying orchids, drowning them, bin them and replace them with new plants. Jürgen Schäfler said: ”Above all, Orchitop is for people who nourish and cherish their orchids for a long time.” He made the prototype from bamboo sticks. Today, the trademarked Orchitop is made by injection molding – and it is made in Germany. It is produced in a Langenargen-based plastics engineering company.

The width between each individual pole has been specifically chosen so that a microclimate can build-up inside the pot and thus, the roots can simply grow through. The inventor insists: ”This means orchids can be removed from the Orchitop without any problem.” This could become necessary once old substrate has to be removed due to decomposition or pest infection. In such cases, you can simply remove the plant, treat the substrate or replace it. In the meantime, Frieda Schäfler is very happy about her gorgeous orchids. Jürgen Schäfler is very satisfied: ” The experiment was totally successful.”
